How to Hygge
Posted on December 23, 2020
Hygge (pronounced “hoo gah”) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfort with feelings of wellness and contentment. Those who choose to live a Hygge life, surround themselves with things that bring comfort and joy to their lives. It’s how they live, who they’re with, and what they eat, think, say and do.
No matter how you incorporate it, everyone could use a little hygge in their lives.
Here are some ways to hygge up your home and life this winter:
- Declutter: Don’t let random piles of junk build up. Go through your mail and other paper work regularly. Organize things in baskets or containers for easy access. Marie Kondo says if it doesn’t spark joy, get rid of it.
- Decorate: Decorate your home with things that are meaningful, functional, and beautiful. Frame your favorite picture of friends and family, decorate with your hobbies and add different light sources like lamps, candles or replace old light fixtures with new ones.
- Cozy it up: The more blankets and pillows, the better.
- Create a conversational area of your home: When friends and family come over, make a clear gathering space. Add extra seats and blankets to make sure everyone has a place to sit and is comfortable enough to make themselves feel at home.
- Stock your fridge and pantry: Make sure you have plenty of food to share with your company. Stock your shelves with nutritional foods to help boost your mood and keep you healthy.
